BREAKING NEWS: PM Tells Vietnamese Deputy Defense Minister to Reconsider His Remarks that ‘Cambodia is a Source of Contagion to Vietnam’

PREY VENG: Prime Minister Hun Sen has ordered the Ministry of Health and border authorities to vaccinate all border guards against Covid-19 to prevent the spread of Covid-19 from neighboring countries, while Vietnam and Laos are very contagious. He did this to respond with the words of a Vietnamese general named Hoàng Xuân Chiến, who said in March 2020 that Cambodia is a source of contagion to Vietnam, which PM said was unacceptable and should be reconsidered.

The Prime Minister says that the insult of Mr. Hoàng Xuân Chiến on 10 March 2020, "If we are not careful about the disease of Cambodia, it will fall to Vietnam like the flood of the Mekong River" is an insult on the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Cambodian people, which is unacceptable. He said that the Covid-19 is not a problem of any country, it is a global disease and all countries have a responsibility to participate in solving it.

He has added that he was not against Vietnam, but against the words of individuals who insulted the Khmer nation.

Prime Minister Hun Sen says, "You should apologize to me, apologize to my people! […] This thing (Covid-19's problem) does not speak in tongues like this with your neighbors. If you speak, I have the right to speak too. I am referring to General Hoàng Xuân Chiến. I do not dare to say the disease flow from Vietnam to Cambodia, but Cambodia must be careful."

The Prime Minister has also stressed that due to this insult, he managed to vaccinate more than 88% of the total population, which resulted in the rate of infection and death from Covid-19 in the country. The country was fully reopened on 1 November.

Since July 2021, the number of Covid-19 cases in Vietnam has jumped from more than 200 cases per day to more than 10,000 cases per day. On Sunday, Vietnam found nearly 1,400 cases of Covid-19 cases.
